What is emergency medical travel insurance?

Emergency medical travel insurance can provide coverage if you are injured or experience a medical emergency while travelling outside of your home province or country.  It can also provide coverage for emergency evacuation to return you and your travelling companion home.  If you are travelling alone, it can provide coverage for someone to attend your bedside while in hospital, provide care for your children if you are hospitalized, and much more.

Out-of-country medical attention can be extremely costly and your Government Health Insurance Plan will not provide adequate coverage while you are outside of Canada. Having emergency medical travel insurance coverage may protect you from the high cost of these medical bills in the event that the unexpected happens.

Why is emergency medical travel insurance important?

Emergency medical travel assistance can play a crucial role in helping you get the immediate medical attention you need.  When travelling, you may not know where to go to seek medical treatment.  Your policy will provide you the assistance you need in helping you locate a certified medical facility no matter what time of day or night you call.

Emergency medical situations can range from minor injuries to life-threatening situations while travelling and may require immediate medical attention or even evacuation. These issues can range from reactions to local food or water, to falling while walking on the beach, to a heart attack and more.

Annual Emergency Medical Plan

This plan provides you with our most extensive medical coverage of:

Does Travel Guard offer family rates?

Travel Guard offers family rates to families under the age of 55. For example, if a family of 5 with 2 parents and 3 dependent children under the age of 21 purchase the emergency medical plan through Travel Guard, the premium will be based on only the 2 oldest travellers. The emergency medical plan is a great way for families to protect against unexpected emergency medical costs while travelling.

Important details*:

  • Family rates apply to a minimum of 1 adult and a maximum of 5 dependents.
  • Family rates are available for the single trip plan or the annual plan option.
  • When you purchase the single trip emergency medical plan for your family, everyone is required to travel on the same dates and to the same location.
  • When you purchase the annual emergency medical plan for your family, this plan allows your family the flexibility of travelling on separate trips during the year or you can travel together.

Real Travel Stories

"I suffered an injury causing me to return home from a 67 day South American cruise. This was on the 14th day of the cruise. I had to leave the ship immediately and hire two cars to carry our 6 suitcases, ourselves (2) and a nurse provided by the cruise line. We travelled 6 hours to Lima Peru, to go to a clinic to make sure I was fit to fly. Before I left the ship, the nurse aboard start a claim with Travel Guard. Travel Guard arranged my flight from Peru to Vancouver. We were reimbursed for our expenses, which was a sizeable amount. I certainly appreciated your service."
