Summer is here, and when the weather starts getting warm outside,
most travellers begin plotting a course for the Caribbean or other
beach destinations. Yet while resorts on islands like Jamaica and the
Dominican Republic may be filling up, Travel + Leisure Magazine has
outlined a list of the world's best secret islands that could make for
the perfect summer excursion off the beaten path.
Topping the list is the Vietnamese island of Con Dao, a small island chain located 110 miles off the southern coast of mainland. Con Son, the only inhabited island of the archipelago, offers sheer granite cliffs and impeccable beaches and crystal blue waters, as well as a few winning resorts that offer luxurious and relaxing accommodations.
For those travellers more interested in making a jaunt to Europe, Pico, Portugal, comes in at number three on the list. The small island is celebrated for its impressive endemic wines, walking paths through volcanic forests and delicious and fresh seafood.
Though the British Virgin Islands are a popular travel destination for fun in the sun, the news provider lists Scrub Island as the best-kept secret in the region. Home to world class spas, exquisite scenery and easy access to entertainment and night life in the region, Scrub Island is a gem waiting to be explored.
