Islands have a funny way about them. Because they’re so isolated from, well, everything else, you can expect to make some unusual discoveries, especially if you’re in the Caribbean. From the wacky wildlife to uniquely exotic food trends, these hot vacation spots are awesome destinations for those who are looking to get adventurous on their next holiday. 

Ready to astound your taste buds? Here are some of the best islands that proudly offer a style of cuisine all their own:

Anguilla
The British island of Anguilla is gourmet all the way. Elite restaurants, rum and fine wine tastings, professional cooking classes and herb garden tours are only some of the attractions that you’ll want to try when you take adventure travel trips or culinary world tours. When you arrive, you’ll quickly discover that the island’s specialty is barbecue, which you can find at both five-star restaurants and pop-up beach stands. Be sure to inquire about the chefs at whichever restaurants you visit, because most have quite an impressive background.

St. Bart’s
This French island serves quite the elite clientele, as celebrities often choose this spot as their vacation destination. If you want to hit up several places in one afternoon or evening, then Gustavia is your place. Here, you’ll find upscale restaurants right along the beach, as well as sidewalk cafes with just as much charm as the pricier dining spots. St. Bart’s is also the home to the region’s largest wine store. La Cave de Saint Barthelemy boasts more than 200,000 bottles of French wine in 300 varieties.

Barbados
When you arrive at Barbados, one culinary staple should be at the top of your must-eat list: a flying fish sandwich. This signature Bajan meal graces menus at both high- and low-end eateries, so you’ll likely find it anywhere, from a roadside rum shack to a gourmet restaurant. Hot sauce, lime and egg batter are the main ingredients, as well as, of course, flying fish. Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands’ long history is one of the reasons that the cuisine is so unique - its influences range from British to Jamaican to Central American. One of the signature meals in Cayman is fried land crab and a deliciously dense cake made from cassava, coconut, sugar and spice. Grenada
When your nickname’s “The Island of Spice,” it’s no surprise that you’re a haven for foodies.
